Need carving - I think. It is about 8-10" high. Only marking I see on it is at the bottom.
Does anyone know anything about it? Old or newer piece? Thanks.
Cool carving? What is it of though? | ||

I am not sure what this is made of on second glance...
To begin with, I don't know who it is but I can tell you it isn't me :) The last picture, the bottom where it shows the grain and color makes me think it was carved from a block of African Bocote wood. The last piece of the wood we bought was $23 a foot. I can't see the saw marks very clearly but it looks like two different types of saws were used to cut this. The outer marks look like they were made by a circular blade and the inner marks by a coarse up down cut type blade. If it is Bocote the wood is terribly difficult to find to buy anymore. It is a quite dense fairly close grain wood with beautiful coloration that go from really dark to blonde in the same board. The cracking on the bottom is no big surprise as it was never green wood waxed to prevent that. The cracks in the face would take years to happen. How many years depends where it has been kept. If you plan to preserve it you might want to think about hand rubbing it with pure tung oil. Yes I spelled it right, it comes from the Tung tree. You need to be sure it is actually tung oil because many companies advertise their product as a tung oil finish when it doesn't actually contain any tung oil. Several coats of it hand rubbed will prevent the transfer of moisture and help prevent more splitting and cracking.
Any idea on the age? Thanks.
It would be difficult to date the actual carving without a ton of time for research. However, the head piece looks like an old kitchen strainer with the handle removed. Is the head piece metal? If it is that would be easier to date.
Hi,
No... Seems to all be wood. The head portion seems to be carved wood only.
I am talking about the net or hat on the head. It has scrape marks showing a silver color that isn't wood. The two prongs sticking out the back are in keeping with how an old strainer would be plugged in to a wooden handle.
Yes... I see what you mean. It actually is all wood... I think. I will update the photo again for a better picture.
Any idea on what this is or age now? Do these pictures help?
