21" x 3" x 9" Salesman's Demonstrator of an adjustable gate post. Patented by Edwin J. Hart, of Butler, Pennsylvania, patent # 257,322, dated May 2, 1882. The "Excelsior Gate Post"
This gate was covered in grime when I received it. The lettering was not visible. Cleaning revealed that it is not a patented gate at all, the post is the object of the patent.
The patent states that a balancing weight mounted on a rope or chain running through a pulley mounted on top of the post, may be used when the post is sufficiently tall enough. It is not included in this model. Some really nice artwork on the gate.
Seems Mr. Hart liked to name his inventions. See his "Climax Gate" in an earlier posting.
Experimented with my photoshop and found that converting a photo to black & white makes the item look much older.
I have to say, I love your whole collection .... very nice ....
