I was told that this 4 x 5 " Tin Type was a image of Frank and Jesse James as kid's. I doubted this but wonder if anyone can recognize who they are ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a great early family portrait.

Unknown family portrait from the lat 1870s- 1880s.
Without provenance or documentation-- "looks like" images rarely "ARE".
Here are some relevent thoughts from wiki on Doc Holliday "looks like" images:
"There are three photos most often printed (but of unknown provenance) of Holliday, supposedly taken by C.S. Fly in Tombstone (but sometimes said to be taken in Dallas). Holliday lived in a rooming house in front of Fly's photography studio. Many individuals share similar facial features and faces on people who look radically different can look similar when viewed from certain angles. Because of this, most museum staff, knowledgeable researchers, and collectors require provenance or a documented history for an image to support physical similarities that might exist. Experts will rarely offer even a tentative identification of new or unique images of famous people based solely on similarities shared with other known images."
You will see lots of sellers online with "looks like" images and folks with entire collections of "famous" people (some even on here). Even with extensive facial analysis, most are never accepted by historians.

I looked at your photo again and historically it wouldn't fit.
The James brothers were born in 1843 and 1847. Tintypes were produced in the US from about 1856 onward. That would mean that IF this were an early tintype, the boys would be 13 and 9.
Your tintype is not that early. While I originally said it was 1870s- 1880s, a closer look at the clothing (and the image size) would cause me to adjust that time about 10 years. I would think that this is late 1860s- 1870s. At that time period both "boys" would actually be men.

Nice photo what I find strange is her hair . Women took pride in their hair and was generally tied back or up in a bun so it was not in way while working . She appears with unkept hair very odd to see on these old photo's .

Looks more like a bad hair year or possibly life.
Yes a rough farm life yet she is wearing a very nice dress but the look on her husbands face may have scared her hair to stand on end , Is he ready to shot the camera man?.
Yes I agree she is having a bad hair day but is it enough to drive her kids to be outlaws. Possibly her husband was the outlaw an afraid his photo would be used on a wanted poster. I guess we will never know who they are lost to history past maybe just a family facing hard times after the Civil War.
