** The "Fugio" story - proposed to the Continental Congress as our first coin, the dollar was never circulated - the 'Fugio' dime of 1787 became the first. The design, with its blunt "Mind your business", was supposedly suggested by Benjamin Franklin, and inspired by a clock which bore the motto, "Tempus fugit, go about your business". On the coin, the Latin words meaning "time flies" became the single word "fugio", or "I fly", with a picture of the sun and sundial implying the swift passage of time. Why the motto for a clock was considered equally appropriate for a coin is puzzling. In any event, the eagle and liberty symbols were authorized in 1792, and the curious "Fugios" were no more.
