Got this in Georgia a couple years ago, I bought my big Amoco sign and the Coca Cola crate rack from a guy and he gave me this. He said here you go thanks for coming all the way from Florida.

I meant to ask you about this - why does it say "Sample" ? - Was this plate ever issued or did they not issue it after the Challenger exploded in 1986? - Or was it a "Commemorative" plate issued after 1986 because of the accident?
These were created to show people what the tag looked like, the guy I got it from said very few were made.

The design of this plate was changed in 1987 but challenger plates are available when you renew for $28 extra. Florida does their best to squeeze a few extra bucks out of us. I believe the one shown was called undated challenger.

I live in Florida. I remember these. However, this plate is rather unusual because it was never issued. It is a DMV plate, used so the registering driver could see exactly what the plates looked like. All the different plate designs are on the wall there.
