Picked up this Ivory Buddha. He appears to be an antique one and is signed on the bottom. I was wondering if anyone could identify the signature on the bottom. Thanks for looking.

My most logical question would be how did you decide this is ivory? The machine cut on the bottom view would seem to cause me to have questions about it being ivory.
I am certain that it is ivory. What you see on the bottom is the Schreger lines. The piece is totally carved...thanks for looking any idea on the carver?
No I have no idea who may have carved it. Perhaps someone in the asian community could help?? Interesting Schreger lines, I couldn't get them to conform to elephant or walrus in terms of the angle. Probably due to a digital image. Closest to elephant.
This is elephant tusks, they are greater then 90 degrees. If they are less then 90 degrees, they would be mammoth tusks. Actually, one of the most accurate ways to determine ivory pieces as that is very difficult to duplicate. They have tried and you will see uniformity in the lines that doesn't happen in nature.
thanks for the love agh...
Hey Jim, yes I agree African Elephant on this one. The yellowish coloring, it isn't clay white. Wow, thank you for the information on the Hotei. Yes, he does have a sack hanging down on his back. Thank you for the information. Would like to find out the carver to better date the piece. Thank you.
Thanks for the love Blunderbuss and Deanteaks
