Found this in my basement. This house was built 1851, but I'd like to know what this was used for. There are no markings on it. The 'jaws' on this clamp (?) rock and that's about all I know.

looks like an early tire spreader,used to spread tire sidewalls apart to make repairs inside of them.JMO
It looks like the 'jaws' could possible hold canvas or leather, maybe to draw them together for sewing???
I'll have to go along with gargoylecollector, thinking bicycle/motorcycle times with the size. I like your (Kerrymac) notion, but believe the design is to spread apart, not draw together. . just my thoughts.
I'm going to lose sleep on this one,lol
It looks small for car tires and would be WAY overkill for bicycle/motorcycle tires.
I'm having a hard time visualizing this thing in action, but it looks like it is pulling together. Pulling apart would open the jaws.. right???
My first stab in the dark is it's a specialty tool for machinery or steel construction.
One thing I am positive about, It doesn't matter how old the house is.
This a "IF", because I don't have in hand. But "if" far end is threaded the handle and nut( can't see, but appears to be squared for fitting nut) would keep jaws tight. The slot at handle end would allow for the spread radius. AzTom, 5.00x 16 m/c tire is pretty tough to work with to place a vulcanizing patch on :-)
