This is a carved U.S. Liberty Head Dollar my great-grandfather from Germany made. - The initials are S and M for my great-grandmothers maiden name. They married in 1902, so this was done prior to that date.
It is an 1885 dated silver dollar pendant on a 21" fine silver chain. The front of the pendant (which is actually the back of the dollar) is carved very fine with engravings all around the inside of the rim and the branch-like sections in the center have swirls and lines, and stars engraved. The reverse (head side) is not as finely engraved, leaving the E Pluribus Unum lettering and the date present. - Passed down through three generations. - Strange it being a U.S. dollar when neither ever stepped foot in America.
