Not sure of the era of this, belonged to my mothers aunt, so I don't think it is bakelite ? My mother is 94, so I'm thinking this is older than bakelite, any ideas :0)

beautiful!!!!
It is probably Bakelite and it is a half of a cloak clasp from about 1920 or so.

Thank you for the information, seems a little large for a clasp?
You didn't give the measurements but it looks right for a clasp to me.
I'm guessing 1,5 -2"?
Could the black part be SILVER (now turned black)?? Might the stone be a Czech cut stone?? The black part looks more like silver turned black IMHO...but I am just going by the Photo. Just my thoughts....can you take some silver cleaner on the back using just a Q-tip in a small spot -- just to see????
It's about 2 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches tall . Design is made of metal , and back is plastic like .
I have a complete clasp very similar to yours (without the rhinestone), mine's Bakelite and brass.

I would love to see the one you have is it posted? Also thank you for your information :0)
You were right Davyd286 ! found this one on Ebay, just like it but brown. Now I wish I had the other half.
This is a victorian celluloid or early plastic cloak clasp, circa 1880 - 1910. It is pictured in Popular Jewelry 1880-1940 by Roseann Ettinger on page 36.
