      I can tell you what it is. I have the same thing. They were sold in Army PX stores during the 70's and were mass produced. I bought mine in Germany for around $20. Mine is on a shelf as a keepsake because they are worth very little. I believe you will find it is made of alabaster. I also have a couple of Buddha's that were made during the same era. I bought them thinking they would increase in value. They are actually worth less today.

      No, I didn't carve mine as you call it. That isn't actually carved, it is done with a dremel type tool. I had designs that were like a stencil you could stick to the bottom and the ink would transfer so you could rout it out if you wanted to. I never did it and over the years lost the transfer sheets. They were like a stick on tatoo.
