We would appreciate any information available regarding our faux lion head trophy. The item was made in Western Germany and retailed by Marshall Fields department store. We are uncertain as to the date of manufacture but would guess perhaps mid century. No makers identification is found aside of that mentioned above. The face, ears and mane appear to be mohair with boar or horse hair whiskers. The hard mount or mold under the face and ears is unknown, however may be paper mache or composition. The item is not heavy to hold. The mouth, teeth and nose are hand painted on plaster. The tongue is covered in a material similar to the face. The plaster is visible in the nose area under the paint where a bit of damage regarding a chip has occurred at some point in time. The eyes are quite lifelike and made of plastic or a like material. The lashes resemble real hair. The trophy has a cord hanging from it's bottom which when pulled causes the lion's mouth to open and a growl to be heard. The growl sounds much like a sheep's bleet as in Baaaaa. The head is attached to a dark brown, wooden shield which is marked on the backside with an ink stamp reading Made In Western Germany along with two partial Marshall Fields price tags. The backside of the shield is unfinished. The only details legible on the tatty tags besides the MF identification are the letters SI or S1, a handwritten 35 and a dollar sign. The price beyond the dollar sign is unknown as the remainder of the tag in that area is missing. The item was acquired from a tag sale here in Illinois. The architecture and furnishings of the home were indicative of the 1950-60's. There was a second faux trophy mount available at the sale in the form of an elephant. It was in every way similar in make up to the lion, including the retailer and remnant price point. It had suffered damage pertaining to broken tusks and a complete split in the wood of the shield, hence we passed on acquiring it. It's mechanical feature when the cord was pulled was a quarter turn to the right of it's trunk which otherwise was in a lowered position. It's shield mount had a little plaque affixed to the front bottom which had no lettering on it. We at first thought that the mount may be Steiff but after research found that although similar to Steiff's jungle animal trophies, it is indeed not. Steiff's trophy line cosmetically resemble stuffed animals and did not include a growler or mechanical feature. This mount is much more realistic in it's aesthetics and is not stuffed. Measurement is approximately 12 inches across the mane by 15 inches top to bottom of mane. Shield mount measures 12 by 8.5. As our exhaustive internet research has yet to turn up anything remotely similar to the mount, we wondered if maybe the lion was acquired from the State St. Chicago Marshall Fields who had a department named Field's Afar. This was a unique, specialty boutique consisting of curiously different and one of a kind objects imported from around the world. Many thanks in advance for any information the forum might have.
