I keep seeing this signature around town, now I know why, he taught at the state university in the 50's. It came from that wealthy estate where I got the big yellow Chinese lamp/vase. The 50's was a good era for studio pottery, I always buy pieces dated then

YES! That's the name I found last night!! I thought it could be him because he taught at a univeristy in my area. Didn't see photos of the signature though to positively ID, so I just wrote the name down and lost it and forgot...

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me TallCakes

      Lol!

Its an early piece, he made it one year after moving to my town. Taught at the state university in the 50's and 60's, exhibited a lot in California before that

Cool, now I know who it is, and why I keep seeing that signature around here lol

seems he is highly respected; with the '55 below the signature it would likely be dated 1955 shortly after his move to Tempe

Yes, he apparently exhibited a lot in California in the 40's and 50's, which is a good combination of area and period for art pottery. You and I are reading the same page lol.

"By the early 1950s, however, Schaumburg was working in clay and joined the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego as a potter. Even after he left the area in the early 1950s, he continued to exhibit as a member.

Don Schaumburg brought a solid California craft ethos with him when he moved to Tempe in 1954 to teach ceramics. He received his B.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and an M.F.A. from the Claremont Graduate School (where he and fellow students Harrison McIntosh and Ward Youry studied with Richard Petterson under the aegis of Millard Sheets in the late 1940s)"

I just spoke to my mother about it and she has found his pieces around here as well. 1955 is the earliest date I could find on his work
