This clock belongs to my sister-in-law. Her mother found it at a sale for a decent price. She had the clock movement cleaned but the thing was just plain ugly with the crappy green paint. I originally tried to see if I could just get it back to the original finish (piano black, I believe), but that was too damaged. I figured I'd attempt to stain it and if it didn't work, I'd just repaint it black.
One of the trim pieces was missing so I made that from bondo. I was able to save all of the scroll carvings by carefully cleaning the paint out of the 'groove'. She loves it now!
Very nice restoration! Someone put those side ornaments on upside down though. I know you put them back the way you found them, but here's how they looked from the factory: http://p2.la-img.com/213/744/334828_1_l.jpg
Thanks for sharing.
Bruce, all I can say is D'oh! I should be able to flip them around without too much problem. Thanks for pointing that out :)
