I acquired this at a auction along with other antique/vintage kitchen utensils. I think it is old as it does not have traditional screws. Obviously it opens and closes. When you close it from an open position it "smashes" the little tray into the little box. It is certainly a dangerous implement.

What is it and what was it used for???? What is its value? I have eliminated my kitchen implement collection and moved onto something else so where can I sell this to get the most for it (if it is a desirable add to a collection)?

Thanks in advance for all the help!!!

I didn't really ID this. Several have come up on CW before & I'm just passing on somebody else's ID.

yes, if it is a candle wick trimmer...it seems a bit complicated. I will assume the melted wax goes in the little tray and somehow the wick is wound around this contraption and run through the tray to coat. But what is the point of the dangerous point on the end-lol??

Candle wick trimmer- When using beeswax or tallow candle the wax burns down faster than the wick- the wick gets too long and you need to trim it to keep the flame from getting too smoky.
Use like a horizontal pair of scissors so that the long burning bit of the wick is cut off and pushed into the little box (safely extinguishing it)
The pointed end is for digging the old wax out of the candle stick to put in a new candle or for digging out a longer end of wick that has fallen into the wax when blown out (or at least that's what I use the end of mine for!)
