Looking for some information on this whiskey bottle. I purchased it at an estate sale in the Philadelphia Area. I believe the decorative overlay is pewter. The ornate flip open top may be sterling. Underneath the overlay, the bottle reads Hannis Distill Co. And I think, Reuse of Bottle Prohibited. Any info on age/value would be greatly appreciated. I couldn't find anything like it on the internet.

      Est. 1863.
The company was established in 1863 by Henry Hannis, who had worked since a boy in John Gibson's liquor store. The company ultimately owned and operated the Mt Vernon distillery in Baltimore, MD. (RD #3). Mt Vernon whiskey was bottled and distributed under an exclusive contract to Cook & Bernheimer Co. of New York.

They built a second distillery in Martinsburg, West Virginia ("Hannisville Mills": RD #1) somewhere between 1863 and 1866.

In 1886, the warehouse on Front St was described as being a five--story and basement building that extends through 143 Dock St. The same article (in "Phildelphia's Leading Industries", 1886) notes that James M Rhodes was President, George H Jarden was Secretary and Treasurer.

The company used the brand names:
"Acme", "Acme X", "Hannis", "Hannis Copper Distilled Pure Rye", "Hannisville", "Hannisville Pure Rye", "Mount Vernon Rye", "Pure Rye Whiskey", "Tidal Wave", and "Victor."

      Business name timeline:
      H. S. Hannis & Co (1870-1871), Hannis Distilling Co. (1872-1917)

      Address timeline:
      216-218 S Front (1870-1917) & 143 Dock (1878-1891)

Have a look for a fineness mark as sterling was often used to encase the bottles.

      TubeAmp,

Thank you for the information. I have not been able to find a fine mark on the bottle. Any idea how old it may be?

The company closed in 1917, and was only known by that name since 1872, so it's in that 45 year period. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Thank you for the information. I will be listing the bottle on eBay this evening.
