The first of the posts on my new PCs was Fountains Abbey. Today begins the first of a related set of cards on Ripon. These cards were collected by Septimus and Clara Miller while they were on a World Tour after Septimus retired from his position as head of the Victorian Racing Club. For those overseas who have an interest in horse racing the VRC is the body that administers Flemington, home of the Melbourne Cup. The Victoria Racing Club was founded in 1864. It was formed following the disbanding of the Victoria Turf Club and the Victoria Jockey Club.
The Miller's were 'horsey'!
No surprise then that Septimus visited some of the racing clubs in England, France, Canada and the US on his 1906 World Tour!
Ripon is home to a great Cathedral and a Racecourse.
So did Clara and Septimus go their separate ways when they were in Ripon?
Are these the cards of Mrs Septimus Miller or did Septimus have input as well?
Not sure yet.
Ripon Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds and the mother church of the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds, situated in the small North Yorkshire city of Ripon, England.
Ripon is arguably the oldest cathedral in England. It lies seven miles north of Fountains Abbey. But Ripon is a sacred site of much greater age than Fountains. Saint Wilfrid established a church on the site in the year 672 AD. The current building is of a much later date in the 12th century.
The card of the Minster is part of the Valentine's Series.
I like the inclusion of the old stables (?) in the photo. Interesting aspect.
Very very beautiful postcards and art of them as well!!! :)
Looks like a fairytale Kev. So beautiful.
Many thanks BLUNDERBUSS, MANIKIN, SEAN, PHIL, AIMATHENA, RACERIVFOUR 'n AGHCOLLECT too! They could well be the stables.
The name Ripon is supposed to have derived its name from the Latin "Ripa," owing to its situation upon the bank of the rivers Ure & Skell that meet there. But I think the waters you see here are the River Skell which also runs through Fountains.
The whole area has been redeveloped since this photo was taken.
Many thanks MIKELV 'n DON too!
Many thanks CHARLIE!
