I occasionally see brass pieces and they really aren't my thing but I liked this. Seems to have a bit more quality and is signed with "dot picked" marks instead of cheap paper labels. Really hard to see these at first glance. The light has to hit them just right to even be able to read them. I figure pieces marked this way are probably older and of better quality, but I might be wrong. This 6 1/4" piece has a nice shape with incised decoration. The floral design is highlighted with red paint or enamel of some kind. -Mike-

Thanks Jay :) ...I actually have a small brass pedestal dish I haven't posted yet that I set aside and forgot about. The top is flat like a cymbal and it sounds like one too. It has an actual name in "dot pick" with numbers, which I'll have to look at closely to see if I can make it out. -Mike-

I have a few brass pieces my father brought back to my mother. He was in the Merchant Marines during and after WWII and shipped out to the far east from India to Japan. Don't know if it's true but I was told the colors were made of gem dust - like red from ruby dust, green from emeralds, blue from sapphires. Do you know what the numbers - the dot pit marks - mean? INDIA . 160 . C On the bottom of a candle holder.

This type of enamel is called 'Benares enamel' and named after the city where it was made - Benares or is known today as Varanasi, and it's on the Ganges.
