An Balinese(?) wood carving in large size I picked up from a 2nd hand shop for $300. It's museum class to me when I dug it up from piles of rubbish. Don't know how long it had slept in the dark corner, but the patina suggest me it could be a bit old. The shop owner has no idea about its origin nor content, but I believe the lower figure is called Garuda, the mythic half-human creature in Hindu belief(also sacred bird in Buddhism). The upper figure is his master Vishnu and riding on him.
I haven't got a chance being to Bali, but my research lead me to think it is a decorative panel on gate of important building. Could anyone help me to solve the myth?
Shrine, I love this piece... I visited Bali a couple of times while living in Asia... It's beautiful and this is a great example. I am by no means an expert, but this does NOT remind me of cheap tourist carvings... It's gorgeous...

Agree with DrFluffy! This is a high quality carving, colors, patina and gold gilt are outstanding. I think you're right it was part of a gate as on last pic there is a rectangular "hole" for assembling. Is it tall?

I love the patina about it...I actually love everything about it. I found a great old piece of Balinese carved wood that was warped.It seemed to belong to something but not sure what.I will try to post tomorrow.I am off cruising from Australia thru Asia to Japan for a whole month.Leave on sunday

Well, not far from you Attwood, we pay a few visits to Sydney annually from Canberra. Some of my treasure were found in Sydney recent years.
I am off travelling to Asia on Sunday.Including Bali-Hong Kong Singapore Vietnam china and Japan
Will be looking for some small treasures.I collect fans amongst other things.
