I saw this little vase and bowl set and fell in love. We are animal lovers, and in addition to our three cats and a seven week old puppy, we have seven bantam hens who free-range in our back garden and provide us with delicious eggs. I don't have many chicken-themed items around the house, but these were just so unusual - "Mary Gregory" style chickens! :)
I have identified this set as Harrach, in the Marmor Aquamarin decor. (The bowl is marked with a 19. in gold script, and the vase with an 11.) It is a beautiful clear bright blue. Alisa was kind enough to take a look at the pictures for me, and pointed out that they were probably decorated by Muhlhaus in Haida, who primarily worked on Harrach blanks. However, in further discussion within a Facebook glass group, it was thought that these may be by another company, and decorated in the style of Muhlhaus. I was shown an amazing example of decoration by Julius Muhlahus that had much finer layered enamel work than on my pair. It was also discussed that companies often had their own varying qualities of decoration from very fine to more rough, so these could be a less refined example by Muhlhaus.
I believe these date to about 1885 - they are in just about perfect condition, which is amazing to me. The vase with the hen is 5 1/2" tall, and the bowl with the rooster is 2 1/4" tall x 3 1/2" in diameter.
Love them .. did you get them for a poultry sum?? :)
Haha! Yes, Oz, I actually did. It was just for chicken feed. ;)
LOL !!
Very pretty!!!
Thanks Gary & Lee! It's funny - keeping chickens is so popular now (at least here in the SF Bay Area), but I have had them for about 15 years...back then I was the weird "chicken lady" and now three neighbors on our street have chickens! The vases are pretty - the chickens are nicely enameled and accented with gold. A pair of chickens on these elegant Bohemian vases just makes me smile, though. :)
Love the colour and the chickens... I have chickens that free range round our garden so these would have appealed to me too!...:-)
inky, I can easily see you having a garden with chickens. They make it so much more colorful and fun. I am glad you like this pair. :)
They're right-up there in the "Pecking" Order! Love the color! RER(BOB)
This color.....it's so beautiful!!! I am just drawn to it. Love, love, love them. Michelleboo7, nice peck!!
Thank you Bob and smiata - I am loving all the chicken humor! :)
