I just got this from my mother's house. I love it, but I do not know what it is called or what what it was used for. Does anyone know what this is?

Not sure on this-- appears to be some sort of storage bin (kitchen??).

Doesn't look like any desk I have ever seen. The substantial side wood on bin would be unnecessary for a desk. Additionally, there are no interior drawers and everything would fall to the bottom when the "V shaped" bin is closed.

Some measurements would be helpful and may confirm size is off for a desk as well.

I'm looking from my phone and might be seeing wrong. But the storage area looks like it's lined with something. Maybe it was used in a kitchen for storing loaves of bread? What does the bottom section look like?

Thank you for your responses! Here's some more clarification:
      • I do not believe it is a writing desk since, when open, the horizontal part of the "drawer" is not flat (there's a ridge to the drawer and detail which would make writing difficult)
      • I am away from home right now and do not have the actual dimensions with me, but I can tell you the height of this piece is exactly the height of today's standard kitchen counter.
      • the bottom "drawer" is identical to the top drawer; also, both drawers have a key lock to the right
      • I lined it with clear contact paper to protect it but it did not come that way
      • I also fist thought it was a grain or flour bin but the above posted is correct: it would not work for loose food items since, when closed, the items would tumble out the back of the drawer (it's only about 1.5" high)
      • maybe a record or file keeper? Why would it have key locks? Thank you again! Keep the suggestions coming and I know this puzzle will be solved.

      Very nice oak cabinet.
The clues are going to be in the pull down bin. Some close up photos of it would help.
The record storage would be possible if it is sized so that it would close. I think it would have had dividers if it were for that.
In my experience Contact paper would do more harm to an antique than it ever help save one.

I feared the same thing with the contact paper. The adhesive tends to splinter the wood when it's pulled off.
