I was just going through some WWII Japanese currency and ran across this one peso note that appears to have a serial number of 87. Assuming its a serial number its the lowest serial number bill I've been able to find by far. However, I am unsure if the brackets around the 87 denote it as something other than a serial number. Any input is appreciated and welcome.

Research fiat peso 1943-45. I don't think you are looking at a serial number. I think it is a series number that followed the earlier issue during the war. My father in law brought home funny money when he got off Luzon and we are still finding it as we go through long forgotten boxes of stuff. This old money, paper or coins are fun and inexpensive to collect. When we started finding it we decided to collect a bit. Our favorite is from Iraq with Saddam on it. Our son sent it home for us.

Thanks fhrjr2 I researched it and I found that you are right about it being a series number: "On the one peso notes only, blocks 80 - 87 had no serial numbers (they were produced in haste after the Americans landed on Luzon- there were 5 print runs). These notes with just plate block numbers are much harder to find than the ones with serial numbers."
