Four 8-cent stamps were issued in the Rising of the Spirit of Independence Bicentennial Issue commemorating communications in colonial times. The 8-cent Pamphleteer commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at Portland, Oregon, on February 16, 1973. The 8-cent Posting Broadside commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at Atlantic City, New Jersey, on April 13, 1973. The 8-cent Post Rider commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at Rochester, New York, on June 22, 1973. The 8-cent Drummer commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at New Orleans, LA, on September 28, 1973. The four stamps were designed by William A. Smith and were issued in sheets of fifty, with an initial printing of 150 million.
