The Little Pencil...
When my daddy passed away in 1996, I cleaned out his truck and found that his ashtray was full of what we called "little pencils". He used to take me to town to this store called "Maxwells"...I was very young so my memories are vague but I bet Bonnie or some of the cousins could help me...Maxwells had a concrete floor, metal stools with red stretched vinyl covering the seats, and a tall bar. We would go there for ....? I think root beer in a bottle...and when my daddy paid, he would " sign the ticket" with a little pencil. This was before we knew golf pencils but perhaps that's what they were...with erasers, though I've never seen those. I really think they were just sharpened down to fit in a little cup. The person behind the counter would sometimes give me one. I loved to write and draw with those little pencils. Apparently my daddy loved them too...I still have one of them from his truck because it has a Barqs root beer clip attached to it. Funny how such little things can bring great joy!
