I have been told this is a U.S. Coast Guard button around Civil War era. It is in real nice shape. No dents or broken parts.

If it is Coast Guard or Light House Service, it's not a variant I am familiar with.
Does it have a back mark? might be able to ID it through the maker.

Definitely not US Live Saving Service (which became the Coast Guard), those look like this: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg092/museum/img/Untitled12.jpg
James can you post a clearer image?
I think it's Navy, perhaps from a pea coat?
I agree with SMD, from a Pea coat, but i think more likely a fantasy button rather than service button.
