The 8-cent Lyndon B. Johnson memorial postage stamp was first placed on sale at Austin, Texas, on August 27, 1973. Lyndon B. Johnson served as vice-president during the Kennedy administration. When Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963, Johnson assumed the presidency. He won re-election in 1964 with 61 percent of the vote and served until 1968. He decided to forego a run for a second term. The stamp was designed by Bradbury Thompson and was issued in sheets of thirty-two, with an initial printing of 150 million.
