Tie pin/sweetheart brooch made as a souvenir from the crashed German Zeppelin L33. This passed over where I live in Chelmsford on 23rd March 1916 and crashed a few miles away. The story about this night can be found here http://www.trenchartofww1.co.uk/zeppelin_souvenirs_49.html
or The Last Poppy Appeal and the Essex Police Museum.
It is amazing the little pieces of history I keep coming across that belonged to my Dad. Aparently the German Officer was so polite he knocked on the doors of local villagers to warn them he was about to ignite the airship! Shame he had just bombed the East End! Very interesting story. x
GREAT piece of trench art-- I love these Zep pieces!
It is great that you have the family history as well.
I am a trench art collector-- see my postings, if you'd like to see other unusual trench art items.
