Wondering if anyone has seen this style of front hinge? Took me a few minutes to figure out the mechanism. Top slides down with and then lifts up. Patent date on it but hard to read - need to get out the magnifier.

Totally new latch to me -- looks like it reads oct. 12 80 (1880). Great tin covering on it. Nice find!!

I am working on the same trunk, as we speak.
I am removing wallpaper with a steamer, from a previous
restoration. I was wondering a out the original paint. It does not seem to be oil based.I know it's the original paint be ause I found the original lithographs in perfect condition on top of the paint. I will post pics of progress!

Hello artbyjackie1 - look forward to seeing pictures of your project. I will post mine next week as my mom is lining the trunk. Question - original paint of inside our outside? I used a sanding sponge to clean the metal - then also sanded the slats - decided to leave black metal as is and then used tung oil on the slats - and then all over a few coats of satin urethane - have a great day. Nice!! I did one similar to this, but the latches were not like this. Very cool indeed!
