Here is my bakelite necklaces and bangles collection. They're not very original (I've seen amazing carved bakelite bangles on Collectors Weekly), but I like their candy colors. One of my favrorites is the Pierrot bangle as well as the Mah-Jong bracelet.

I have around 90 bakelite bangles and my favourites are plain domed designs! Nothing wrong with that :) I have a Pierrot piece also, I love seeing the different versions.

Whoa I love the pierrot piece!
I think I only have about thirty or so bangles and about 15 necklaces in bakelite. All plain and simple bangles and one lucky polka dot find. I m still trying to find more though!

      Thank you! :)
To Newtimes: As you said in one of your comments (about your wonderful polka dot bangle), collecting bakelite is not that popular in Belgium as well as in the rest of Europe actually (I'm French). So it feels great to have comments and 'loves' from people sharing the same (good ;) tastes...
By the way, 30 bangles and 15 necklace is not bad!

      Thanks Phil!
Bakelite is actually not very difficult to recognize with a little experience, but it's easier to get real bakelite when you have to possibility to handle it (a simple picture can be misleading). There aren't so many fakes (except for a few modern copycats made in Asia), but some contemporary plastics may have the same aspect (although most of them are pretty different to the touch). Bakelite is not that popular in Europe so forgery is not widespread either. It may be different in America...
Here is an interesting page about the subject:

I really love bakelite jewelry and I'm also on the lockout for more. I also adore your Jacob Bengel jewellry!!

I go into many charity shops here and there are lots of bangles of a plastic bangles hanging around the costume jewellery, but I just wouldn't have a clue how to know if they are Bakelite or not. They are nice though.

Thanks for this new comment, Elisabethan!
Hamish, with a little training, you'll manage to distinguish bakelite from other plastics. Bakelite is often marbled and it has a specific shine. It also makes a characteristic 'clink' when you knock it against something hard. You can also use simichrome polish to check if your jewelry is made of bakelite. If it is, your cloth will turn yellow to brown as you rub your piece of jewelry (simichrome is innocuous to most types of plastics - it cleans them and makes them shine). Hope this helps! :)

So Bakelite is never dull, always shiney?
    14. Betty1978 Betty1978, 9 years ago
Yes, it usually is shiny, except if it shows heavy signs of wear...

You are welcome. I really enjoyed returning to all your posts today. You have so many things I like and I learn from them.
By the way, have you any thoughts on my latest post on a art deco machine age necklace. Would love to see what you think of it's origin and the material in the beads. If you want and have the time :).
