The seller told me this story in relation to the item:

"In terms of additional provenance - I did ask my Gran. She remembers it very well, particularly the moment when she introduced her son (my father, who would have been in his late teens then) to Ali, who promptly exclaimed "My Goodness! What an ugly son you have!" She was actually rather offended at this, but my father found it all very amusing and has been dining off the tale every since!"
