Mystery puppet

This puppet has been in our family for perhaps close to 40 years... my mother doesn't recall where it came from and im interested to find out more if possible. I cannot find any identifiable tags or markings except for a 'copyright' symbol and the initials S.T on the 'finger piece' (for want of a better word!) inside the puppet.
I think the eyes are plastic as is the nose. It has quite a solid head which is stuffed with what looks like thick/neat wood shavings (it is coming apart near the finger piece a little). Its been well loved!
Would love to know if anyone has seen anything like it, im interested in the age and history.....
