Ah Fab price!! i have two of these, Victorian Era steamer trunks. Yours is a dome top and still has the original compartment tray that you lift out. This compartment would have held some ladies items. A lady would have most likely owned this trunk. The dome top trunks were for more affluent people because they didn't want their trunks to ride on carriages mixed in with any lower class trunks, a dome top would have been on top of the pile ensuring that it would be the first off the carriage. (and of course nothing could be stacked on top of a dome) Flat top trunks were owned by more common folks and of course with a flat top/lid, other trunks could be stacked on top of them. I love dome top steamer trunks and i paid a lot more for mine. Your dad stole it! ha! well done! in that condition i would say it's worth $100-150 and it would date from the laterVictorian Era...approx 1880-1900ish..I can't really tell by the pictures but it appears to be all original....I good deal indeed!

Does it still have the lock? get a magnifying glass and look at the lock mechanism and check for any writing...it's easier to get an exact date if it has writing on the lock...as long as it's original. :)
