    Hi,

Hopefully someone out there will be able to give me some information on this painting. I bought it at an auction in Tarbes in South West France some while ago and have been puzzling over it ever since. At first I was not sure it was a painting because of the dimpling but a very famous artist who lives near me has confirmed that it is oil on canvas and some luddite many years ago has stuck it onto board.

I would be grateful for any information.

      Veil of Veronica image.

It has those eyes! Closed, but sometimes open. The famous name behind the image is Gabriel von Max aka Gabriel Cornelius Ritter von Max. He did an original in 1915 called 'Veraikon' (The True Image of Christ).

That 'signature' looks a lot like Jes.C. to me.

I had seen the picture by Von Max and it is the only one that is in the same style but the detail is very different. The colours, the shape of the face, the cloth and many other tiny details so I concluded that it is not from him. There are obvious similarities. The artist has very delicately painted the eyelids with s;ightly contrasting circles of paint which gives the illusion of the eyes being open in certain light.
