My wife's great uncle was killed in WWII durring fierce combat against the Germans, as a SGT with the 71st Infantry division, while liberating Bayreuth, Germany April 15, 1945
His name was Harley E. Swartz, from Winnebago county, Illinois
Any additional information about this battle or my wife's great uncle would be appreciated.
Thanks
I hope and pray y'all get some info. My father in law was in WWII, but he past a few years ago. I can remember bits of him telling me of his times while there. My son completed a report for school about his times in WWII. I still have his little notebook/address book of some of the guys/friends there. If i see your great uncles name in any of the notebooks or true happenings he told his grandson (which I voice recorded also), I'll let you know
Here the Australian War Memorial retains all records of service, including all paperwork involved in awarding special awards for bravery. I would imagine there would be a similar library kept in the US, and would be surprised if you couldn't check records on line.
Worthwhile trying to find out more information about your brave relative.
