I bought this about a month ago from an antique store. Usually I wouldn't expect to get a great price, but I believe I did on this piece. It is a large solid oak ice box which is in excellent shape. Most of the original parts are still there except for the metal shelves and the catch on the lock. I am going to use it as a buffet or a server in the dining room. It is an interesting piece, the top flips open, and it has the two door front If anyone knows more about these I would be interested to know. I believe it was made by "Century". Enjoy!

Yeah. Look at the one I reproduced via my CW site. I did a lot of research & mine is totally functional now for our hurricanes. I may have the only cold beer on the island one day & hopefully for a week, or more if the maritime ice plant doesn't get blown away.
I didn't realize how rare these had become until about 15 yrs ago on a trip to the States, & I couldn't find even 1 in all the antique shops from Lexington, KY to Montgomery, AL! You have a real beauty!
Does the front bottom panel hinge out & do you have the drip pan? Of course the top hinges up so you can put the block(s) of ice in the tray.
Are you sure that is a "C" in the name as it looks more like a "G" to me but a quick search didn't come up with anything from that angle.
hey blunder, I will check it out in a minute. Thanks, yea, I saw this and kept thinking about how perfect it would be over the next few weeks. I finally went back and made an offer, we settled in the middle and it was mine. Front panel does not have a hinge its purely decorative. No original drip pan, unfortunately. I might buy one so I could use it when we have company one day. Love the designs and the oak on this one. My dad thinks the same thing that it is a "G" and not a "C" I still have no idea, google doesn't really help. Let me check yours out now.

No offense but I think this has parts from two different units that were used to repair and make one. The carving on the stiles don't match and the center door panels are questionable. You may well have parts from two different units that got married.
zowie, thank you for the comment. fhrjr, yes I trust that your opinion is correct. I was a little suspicious about a few things...inside the shelves are wooden, I would think that they should be metal. The catch is def. not original, it doesn't match at all. I did not pick up on the two different sets of carvings though. Of course, now it is clear as day. Now I understand why this was so cheap. too good to be true.
No, no BHock. You have a real nice piece even if it is a marriage made yrs ago, probably. That's why they came up with the term "representative" of and era.
On line, you can find many sources for replacement hinges, latches etc.. You should be able to tell what the originals were shaped like by examining the shadows left on the wood of the door posts or doors.
We all live and learn and with luck we develop a keen eye in the process. You are right about the shelves. You have a unique piece to enjoy and few will notice the difference.
blunder, yes, actually that was exactly why I think the catch is not original. I know the rest are original. fhrjr...you are correct, few people will know the difference, but if they do I am now prepared. Thanks for the help, later guys.
Hope we helped. It is so close to my repro that I love seeing it come up on posts. I do want to ask, if the front skirt doesn't hinge out, where does the drip pan go? That was one of the reasons people had kid back then, was to balance the drip pan while taking it out to dump. Guess I could go back and change a pic on mine to show the drip pan. Since they were rather flat, it was a balancing act to take it out & dump.
very good question blunder. Honestly, I have no idea. I will give it a look tomorrow and see if I could figure something out.
BHock, I took some pics of the drainage system in mine if you want me to send them to you. Give you an idea where to look for evidence of the old plumbing in yours.
