My first Garage Sale purchase this year....again something that I can't figure out and which the former owner has no idea what it was used for. I am always attracted to interesting/different stuff so had to buy it. It could have been used to magnify something since there are two large crystal glass lenses that are convex on the inside and flat on the outside. Both rims of the Cylinder can be removed and one lens can be removed; to clean I suppose. The magnification of each lens is tremendous and when you look through the sides, the magnification is increased. How it was supposed to be used; I don't know! It measures 4 1/2" by 2 1/2". It is completely unmarked and the lenses are flawless. Any ideas? Thanks, RER(BOB)
I'd be using it out on the hunt looking for signatures.
Handy item when the eyes fade.
.....my guess, for BUGS??
You put the bug under it to see if.....for those people that catch and document bugs for science. A travel type of one or to use in the Field??
No markings of any source on it??
i agree w/ vetraio50 and antiquerose. it's for looking at nature close-up. they still sell them. i almost bought one in mendocino the other day. very handy for counting petals and stamens, etc...
Thank you vetraio50, antiquerose and ho2cultcha for the comments....you are probably on the right track with this being an observation/magnification tool. The cylinder is made of metal and is completely unmarked. It weighs over two pounds so it would be impractical to be holding it for nature studies. I think it may have been part of some medical/dental equipment but it's a guess. BOB

I looked at the first picture and I thought it was a spittoon for a midget. I'm sure glad someone else could identify it.
