This was my first Welz piece and remains my favourite because of its décor, 'Stripes and Spots'. If you run your fingers round the inside there's a 'rib' exactly between the two dark green lines! Is this to do with how they made the stripes? Also the white 'lining' layer doesn't cover the lines. I would love to know how they made these lines.

Additionally there's silver sparkle (aventurine?) in the green, middle, layer, but that at least isn't a puzzle. I also like that I'm only the second owner of the vase and both of us have cherished it.

The vase is 7 inches tall, czechman, and it's glossy, not satin finish.

      GREAT Welz!

Agree with czech-- some guess; others make careful, thoughtful observations and analyze/ research to arrive at attributions. I prefer the latter.

sklo42, what a wonderful Welz Vase!!!
    11. sklo42 sklo42, 11 years ago
Thank you Moon. It really is well made.....even the spots come with a neat little surrounding line! Not that that's unusual for Welz lines and spots.
    12. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
Nope! You may guess-- others prefer to take a more scientific approach to attributions. The identification is based on observation and analysis to arrive at a SUPPORTABLE attribution.

Great piece... doesn't seem to make a difference... Welz...Kralik... either way, All agree VERY NICE vase. But I wouldn't know either decors from a piece reproduced and bought at Walmart.. so my input wouldn't account for much :-)

I know -zero about glass and the following are simply my "observations;" in no way am I attempting to state an attribution. ;-) I don't have any definitive reference books or I would provide citations.

From the website Kralik-Glass dot com, examples of "Welz Stripes & Spots." The links are in frames so I can't give you a direct link. On left-side menu, under "WELZ," click on "Visual Decor Index" and then in 6th row, 2nd from left, click on "Stripes & Spots:"

An article by Craig Orkney, same site as above, discussing his observations of the distinction between Welz and Kralik glass. Same link issue, on left-hand side menu, under "WELZ," click on "Why Welz? - A Preface."

      Just happy you stopped by to say, "great piece", kerry. After all I bet you'd beat us all into a cocked hat on timepieces. :-}
    16. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
      Welz:
      - Decor DOCUMENTED by Passau
      - Example of decor bears the FWK label

I'll go with the museum, label and the empirical research that ALL points to Welz.

Those who feel otherwise can continue to GUESS Kralik!

Welz, I think, in agreement with Welzebub - I could direct you to his amazing website (how many man hours?) http://www.kralik-glass.com - where you will also find link to some other amazing Bohemian glass websites such as Alfredo's - but expect you have already been there. I think he (they) should bring out a book - and probably would have already, had the electronic medium not surpassed the printed ca. 2000.
I am always ready to be informed, as a beginner.

One of my favorite WELZ decors...I actually do not have this décor in my collection... :(
    24. sklo42 sklo42, 11 years ago
Ah ha, jagsrock95, is that your secret ploy? :-). Seriously, I adore 'lines and spots' but can't find it over here. Must try harder!

The Welz attribution is solid... and others are free to make their GUESSES!

Rare combination of lines with the confetti that is usually seen on bi-color decor (usually with turquoise base color)
