I need your help for this one... I bought this necklace because I liked its design that reminded me of some Art Deco pieces from the 1930's.
Looking at it closely, I noticed it was marked '800' (German or nickel silver?). Doing some research on the web, I found out it looked a bit like some of these tribal necklaces from Rajasthan... The clasp is unusual and quite huge (1,6 cm).
    Any opinion on this?

Nice piece - but I am not sure that the 800 mark means German or nickel silver, because I believe that German/nickel silver is actually not silver. I think 800 means that it is real silver but with a lower content - 800 parts silver and 200 parts other metals.

I forgot to mention that some German and other European jewelry is made of 800 silver usually dates to the earlier part of the 1900's - but I am not an expert:(

I think this is a Victorian (about 1880) necklace and the use clasp could be used to a silver medallion hanging as often seeing this period . The hallmark 800 is real silver but as mentioned before by other collectors a lower silver content. See some example of this kind of jewelry on my post:

Wow, thank you Agram.m! You made my day! I got this necklace for a few euros... Neither the lady I bought it from neither I even suspected its distant origin. But indeed, this necklace looks very much like one of yours. This is definitely the oldest piece I own. Thank you so much for solving the mystery! :)

real silver with lower content, 800 hm's are older other than that!

Hi southcop! Agram.m thinks the necklace dates from the 1880's. Do you share her opinion?

To say again this is an example of a classical Victorian necklace about 1880 with a big clasp to hang on a locket.
