Just inside the Lions gate north of the Palace there is one of oldest surviving mazes in the United Kingdom. It is within a parkland area that covers 60 acres of riverside gardens. The maze is now the remnants of what was once the many winding paths of William III's 'Wilderness Garden'.
‘It is the most famous Maze in the history of the world, and immeasurably the one most visited.’ (Ernest Law, 1926)
It is not a huge maze, it covers just a third of an acre and contains half a mile of paths. The Hampton Court Maze takes just 30-45 minutes to complete.
Unlike a labyrinth which has just a single path, the Hampton Court Maze is 'multicursal': a puzzle maze that has baffled and delighted visitors since the 17th century.
The Maze was planted by George London and Henry Wise for William III of Orange in 1690. But it is thought that the current maze replaced an even older one, possibly devised for Henry VIII or Thomas Cardinal Wolsey.
This is a PC from the Wellington Series published by Gale and Polden Ltd., London, Aldershot and Portsmouth, numbered 12033.

Many thanks MIKELV!
Oh thank you so much Kevin for the beatiful memories. I drove past this palace every day for 18 months with one of my jobs I had over there. From Carshslton to Egham, both in Surrey. This palace is magnificent, my darling husband took me to visit on a Sunday for my birthday. I think from memory Henry built this for one of his wives.
The maze looks amazing now. Your postcard is very accurate. Takes some a little longer than. 45 minutes to get through...but thank you. These cards you have are just incredible. It's like your own grand tour...
Thanks ANNE for the encouragement. There are more to come!
