I would love to know the age, origin and style of this ring that I just bought. I´ve seen two other rings like this, one exactly like this and one in the same model but with a yellow stone in it. One of the rings, the one that looked just like mine, was said to be german, marked 835 and from the late 19th Century and the other one was said to be from the 50's but had no information other than "european". So I´m quite confuced.
My ring has several stamps, one that sais 830S (silver). I know 830S was used in Norway but in the page www.925-1000.com I found a german mark aswell with that 830S mark. I found information on antother sight saying that most european countries up until 1920s used the 830. Other sources say that 830 is common in older european silver jewelry. I wonder what "older" means here? My ring also has the Swedish importstamp for silver that was introduced in 1913, and the ring is marked "54" inside. I wonder what that means? Is it a size and in that case does that say anything? The ring is about 17mm i diameter.
The ring has a rubyred stone or glass that is cut. I think it´s what you call pastestone in English but that´s just my guess.
The ring is very patinated and dark but I´m thinking of keeping it like this.
Grateful for information of anykind that can lead me to an answer.

Idcloisonne, thanks! I was so excited when I saw your respond here. I will invest in litterature and I will have the glass/stone investigated at some paint. Thank you for the instructions! I agree that with knowledge you can avoid mistakes, until now I have been lucky and haven't spent a lot at all, try to be resonable when I by things at auctions and getting things for a modest price is part of the thrill. It is possible if you happen to be at the right auction at the right time and when you know a little bit more then others or are interested in pieces other aren't. Here it seams like most jewelry buyers are interested in modern pieces and jewelry from the 50's, 60's and 70's, danish, swedish and Norweigan. So when I find other things I'm lucky to be one of few interested...yet :-). In order to learn more I need to ask you what makes you think the ring is dutch? Thanks again!

Hi Elisabethan, do you know what the stone is, to me it looks very much like Garnet, very nice, my type of ring. The ring size 54 I think is American, it's about a size M or N in the UK.

How do you test stone?
Go on to ebay and type in Diamond tester.
It's only for Diamonds.

Just lovely... I find it interesting that they use to give ladies colored gem stones rather then diamonds. Diamonds came later, as just an accent, and then later became the trend. I personally am attracted to the color and diamonds as an accent myself.
Thankyou Man_444! Yes that's right. I think both are beautiful but like gold I find diamonds has a value already in the value of the metall/stone. Therefore often when less expensive materials like silver, glass or less valuable stones have been used the artists have had to do more intricate artistic work to a piece. That's why I'm intrigued by the less obviously valuable pieces.
