English hallmarked solid silver pen wipe and stand designed in the form of a Victorian walking stick or umbrella stand (as some would prefer), made by Sampson Mordan fully hallmarked for Chester 1903.
Designed so that dip pens can stand upright, and their tips wiped of excess ink on the natural bristles prior to writing.

3.2 inches high
3.5 inches wide
2.4 inches deep
Just too add, I've seen several examples by Mordan in the form of boot brushes etc, but this is the first of this design I've found by Mordan. I'd be interested to know if anyone has any other examples?

I just bought one as part of a set - Mine does not have the bristles, just a blue felt like bottom - Hallmarked Chester - Sampson Mordan and Co. - 1904
That's interesting to know, yours sounds very much like a hat pin stand (is it a padded felt bottom?). I have always thought the piece could be used as either a pen wipe or hat pin stand.

Maybe the bristle one was for a pen wipe and the other for a stand of other? I'm sure the Queen has one of each - My family had neither!
