Hampton Court Palace started life as a barn on the Manor of Hampton. Cardinal Wolsey and Henry VIII remodeled it into a substantial Palace. Charles I lived there and after his execution the Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell and his family moved in too. Later King Charles II and his successor James II preferred living elsewhere. But when the Dutch William III and Mary II came to the throne in 1689, they decided to rebuild and expand the Tudor Palace.
William and Mary wanted their own Versailles in England.
Large sections of the old palace were demolished just a month after their arrival. They employed Sir Christopher Wren to plan the ‘extensions’. The plan was for a vast palace constructed around two courtyards at right angles to each other.
During this work, half the Tudor palace was replaced and Henry VIII's state rooms and private apartments were both lost; the new wings around the Fountain Court contained new state apartments and private rooms, one set for the King and one for the Queen. The King's Apartments face south over the Privy Garden, the Queen's east over the Fountain Garden.
Rooms with a view: the Baroque extensions of Sir Christopher Wren.
Unfortunately the Queen died suddenly of small pox in 1694 at the age of 33.

The King’s Apartments were badly affected by the disastrous fire of 1986 but have now been restored.

When you think about lighting and heating right up until late 19th century it's a wonder that any house, castle or palace survived as they did!
You're right! Thanks again KAREN!

I think the team of William and Mary would have been formidable if she'd lived long. Sad what they did to Henry's are but back then there was no English Heritage, some might say for the better...it was just as well they got Wren in but would have been nice to have really Frenched it up a little...I just love the wholeGeorgian and romantic period and not does that like the Fench. This was the thing that struck me about the English palaces, they weren't/aren't ornate and castles like Hampton and Windsor are totally impractical to live in as a house. I guess Windsor was more a fort maybe and the loser southern ones were more about protection than wealth and ornate showings...
Kev you have amazed me with this collection. I see so many vases that I love on here and bits and bobs but I look forward every week to seeing what's next...and your research is fabulous, giving everyone the history lessons we need ...Anne xx

Kev did you get my email? With the free ticket offer?
The Antiques Fair! I did ANNE, thank you. I have never been to one of them at the Showgrounds. I have been rude. I should have thanked you. My apologies.
No no no, I was more worried that the graphics in the dealers email may not have got through your mail server fire wall etc.. You're not rude at all...did you ring her and see if she had any left? I just didn't want you to miss out...I only sent it this morning or some such...
I went to the Melbourne Exhibition building one which had a furniture focused theme and some silver with a touch of ceramics, the one held this time last year, I think it was around the time, as guest of Lynzay antiques....a great dealer and he had a huge display this year at Ballarat...
Most of the dealers are terrific, some leave you shaking your head...
Anyway I'm glad you received it ... :)
