This item came to me as a purported Inca Wine Jug. If there is anyone who could accurately identify it, I'd be extremely grateful.

i think that this is a Peruvian colonial blackware piece - could be very early - as far back as the 1600s, but could also be later - into the 1800s, or even a very good repro [but i doubt it]. it's a very nice piece. the decoration is very interesting. i think that it represents the sun god [Inti Raymi].

i take it back. i don't think that it is a colonial piece or even one done later. i think it's a pre-columbian piece - a Chimu blackware vessel which was made in the Moche Valley, near present-day Trujillo, Peru. the decoration is unusual and i'm sure it's representative of something - could be a spondylus shell, conch, the sun, or Lord Nalamp - the mythical founder of the post-Moche civlization.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm amazed at such an immediate response. I was told originally that the piece was Peruvian, but also that it was possibly pre-Colombian. Also, I was informed by the seller that the figure depicted was a sun god. You have certainly shone a little more light on this lovely object.
