    This stamp is a First Issue, Scott Catalog no. R54 Conveyance revenue featuring George Washington and has a face value of fifty cents. I had never seen a stamp like this. What a great learning opportunity! People used to use stamps to pay for taxes, life insurance, mortgages and as proof of purchase for items such as tobacco.

      Ah! Less that 100 yrs before it changed from "taxation without representation" to even "higher taxation with misrepresentation". Some things never change!
