Josephinenhütte vase designed by Julius Camillo de Maess, ca. 1900

Julius Camillo de Maess was a designer/painter from Berlin who had a collection of objects as part of the Josephinenhütte exhibit at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, where the glassworks was awarded a Gold Medal. Typical de Maess decoration incorporates bold stripes, swirls, tendrils, and stylized florals in the art nouveau taste.

This vase: green transparent crystal, mold blown. Fire polished rim and small ground and polished pontil; unmarked. Painted with red and black opaque enamels and gold. Height: 4.75 inches. A similarly decorated vase exists in the Glasmuseum Passau, and is represented in Stefania Zelasko's book "Josephine Glassworks - Art Nouveau - Art Deco - Modern, 1900-1950" (see last photo scan)
