I decided to run up to the GW in Oberlin this afternoon and I came home with this neat little piece of artwork. It measures 19" x 23" framed but the actual picture is only 17"x 11" It looks like a water color maybe done by a child. I think it's a folk art primitive done by an adult just because of the fact that it has been framed. It didn't have a signature only the title on the front. I decided to open it up and it was very brittle and delicate. The back paper just crumbled if you even bent it . There was a cardboard back which was just as brittle held in place by about fifty tiny brads. The picture is on watercolor board and glued to the mat. On the back I found written 1894 > or maybe it's even 18947 and a name I really can't read. I think that's the date and artist but who knows. The only thing I'm sure of is that it has some real age to it. I cleaned the glass, took pictures and buttoned it back up. That's all I have to go on. As is so often the case this will probably remain a mystery, but it's still is a nice antique piece of artwork. -Mike-

      I love this Mike.

Why not contact an art store in that area and see if they know anything? I do not know much about Art -- but something tells me this is a Good Piece. I think it might be worthy to further check into it -- but be leery if they offer to buy it.....make know first of all it is a Not For Sale, period!!

Just maybe say you want an Appraisal and your keeping it

That's always something I think about when I find prints and art work Rose, since Oberlin is a fine arts college town. They have a nice little art museum and antique shops so finding pieces like this at their Goodwill always make me wonder. Local families donate these items that grandma or grandpa had and they think it's just an ugly old picture. It does remind me of artwork I've seen on our Antiques Roadshow series. Grandma Moses comes to mind but there are a lot of other folk artists too. I have the same feeling as you that it's by someone important or why go to the expense of framing it and it's pretty old and fragile. -Mike-
