This was a gift to me when I was in college some forty odd years ago. The giver said it was very old and might have been 16th century. However the lack of a hall mark and the engraved initials HBD make me wonder if it is not a custom made spoon sold "under the table".

You have a dumpling spoon engraved for Hard Breaks Deaver! Just joking. Prompted me to Bing when "STERLING" was 1st used. Interesting & had no idea it was so ancient.

Very nice spoon. It looks like a sugar sifter with the cut outs. (Used to sprinkle powered sugar over desserts etc) I have a ladle with the date 1802 and name engraved on it. I know it was made in Germany or At least given to a German lady. No makers makes so it could have been a one off. Also I have read that only one piece of a set may have been marked with the makers initials etc. maybe this helps
