After the first introduction of Mickey Mouse timepieces to England in 1934, Ingersoll again in 1936 produced new variant of the pocket and wrist watches for the English market. These are commonly known today as 'Bearded Mickey's' in that Mickey Mouse appeared to have grown a 'Pink Beard'!
The watches are powered by UMF movements made in Germany and marked "Foreign" for the English market. Some collectors argue that these are the most attractive of all the early Ingersoll Mickey Mouse Watches.
As Mickey was not too famous in Europe in the mid 30s and also these timepieces were quite expensive at the time as toys for children, not too many were sold. Hope you have enjoyed this posting!
What a sweet Mickey¨s watch!
Hi icollectglass, due to lack of television and cinemas/reading imported comics were expensive pastime, ordinary children in the UK in the mid 30s would be more familiar with their local comic characters as these were more accessible. There were actually quite a few the then famous ones, for instance, Oojah, Rupert Bear, Beelzebub Jones, Desperate Dan, Belinda, Jane, Bessie/Billy Bunter, Bobby Bear, Buck Ryan etc etc! Other parts of Europe will probably have their own famous comic characters but I am not too familiar.
