This was my grandma's chocolate pot given to me in 1974. I don't see very many pieces with birds. Is this a common set?

GREAT set-- I have seen it before, but believe it is unusual/ hard to find!

scottvez, right on point, as always. You never cease to amaze me. :-)
Gretagirl, a beautiful and very uncommon theme with cobalt blue birds with a landscape background, as opposed to a floral background. You should determine if it is handpainted or transfer-printed. Use a loupe or magnifying glass and is you see tiny dots, it's transfer-printed, but my guess is that yours is handpainted since there is gold decoration.
According to this article by Jim Kempster on the site, rsprussia dot net, he refers to the cobalt blue birds as the "early birds" by R. S. Prussia. An informative article (but no bio on Kempster):

There are numerous definitive reference books on R. S. Prussia and should be available at your library or museum library. Leland Marple is considered a leading expert and Schiffer has published quite a few books.
All the pieces are hand painted 3 of the 5 cups have the signature and the chocolate pot has the signature that I took a picture of.
The blue birds (or swallows) are always transfers. The background was hand painted by the decorator to blend with the transfer. There is no fully hand painted RS porcelain except for the pre 1894 era. After that, outline transfers were used, with the colours filled in by hand at a later stage of production. After 1900, full colour transfers were used, with hand painted touches to complete the piece. Even pieces marked "Hand Painted" on the bottom are not really hand painted; it was just a sales technique to make the item more attractive to buyers.
