I recently purchased this stein at an estate sale - I would very much like to learn as much as I can about it. My mothers maiden name is Petersen and would like to se if its the same! I also married a Larson! So this combination made it very interesting. My Maiden name is Hapke. I have sarted to collect steins and would love to aquire more of the same.
Anyone if you have information, history to share it would be most appreciated!!
What I Understand this is most likely a reproduction stein- because of the bump on the inside of the handle?
An attractive stein, but a modern reproduction. Originals did not have the "bump" in the handle, and the pewter lids of originals had a high tin content, and appeared much brighter, especially on their interior. The slanted sides are another giveaway. Original steins, especially of naval units are costly and rare. I recommend your becoming a member of "Stein Collectors International", an organization devoted to the history and collecting of all types of vintage beer steins. There you will learn to discern originals from the modern copies. There are several excellent reference books "Regimental Beer Steins" by Ron Heiligenstein, and "Deutsche Reservisen-Bierkrug" by Siegmund Schaich, both of which are printed in German and English, with outstanding information and illustrations. They are not cheap, but will save you far more than their purchase price by steering you to the real deal instead of fantasy pieces. Good luck with your collecting endeavors.
