Found this beautiful tiger oak wardrobe in the state of Kentucky. It's called a knockdown because it comes completely apart. It comes apart so you can haul it easier, and you can get it to the upstairs. If this didn't come apart it wouldn't go in my upstairs. It's very easy to take apart and and put back together.

yes nice piece official i use to sell those for 1800 or more 20 years ago. highly collectable. back then everybody had wardrobes because if you built closets they would tax you for the closets so alot of people just had wardrobes and your right they made knock downs just for the idea of using them upstairs. they are getting harder to find .

Thank you vanskyock24! Yes prices are really down on antique furniture. You might not believe this but I sold this to a lady. After 6 months she called me and said she couldn't use it anymore. She said if you come and get I will just give to you. So it's been in my bedroon ever since.

I've owned one of these for years and never realized that it came apart until recently. Is there a right way or wrong way to take it apart? Also I'm thinking of painting mine as the oak wood is very "rustic" and a little beat up looking. Any help or opinions would be great! Thanks Bonnie

@Bonnie,::::::::::::::join the fun ! post a picture and some info so we can all see your prize and maybe someone here can give you some real advise........
    17. officialfuel officialfuel, 13 years ago
Thank you Bonnie for stopping by and commenting. There's only one way to take it apart and put it back together, or it won't go back the way it was intended. As far as painting it, why don't you refinish it with a new coat of stain bringing it back to the days it was new. Hope this helps and have a great day. :-)

gotchya ;) this is bigger than my brute, and mine doesn't knock down!
I often wondered about how they got those big old 'closets' in those tiny bedrooms.

Lovely piece! Love the fact it has feet. I personally haven't seen one with feet before! Love your room too. One of these days maybe I'll clean my house and post some pictures of some of my furniture. *LOL*
As an aside, I had one that I found in the late '60s in an abandoned caved-in family cabin. It had been 'knocked down' and amongst the wreckage of the cabin, IT looked wrecked. Brought it home, gave it some love and lived with it for 30 years. It now resides in my year old grandson's room at my daughter's home. He'll get to grow up with it! It doesn't get any better than that. Guess that's why most of us collect, isn't it? To keep the beauty and the knowledge going?

My son and I used to move antique furniture. We had some pretty hairy situations. People buying something big and bulky and not measuring their doors ceiling heights especially the high wardrobes etc. In the end it was all good after having a few laughs with the owners when we got stuck surprisingly though we got everything in place without damaging the pieces or walls. This would have been a dream to move:)) Beautiful piece Michael!!

I recently was given a 8 foot wardrobe. Started to take it apart to get it upstairs. Found out it came right apart! Just so smooth. Mine is in no way compares to this lovely piece. Its beautiful what a treasure!
